Can't make it Until September [08 Apr 2009|12:40am]

[ mood | crushed ]

As Hockey East is coming to a close, my friday and saturday nights are now wide open...and I was just wondering if there is life after hockey?
It is a sad, sad realization that without the Black Bears or Minutmen I have a gaping hole in my life.
What do the rest of college hockey fans do when the season ends and the wait begins?

UMaine Message Board [12 Jan 2008|07:48am]

[ mood | awake ]

Many of us tried to flock to the blackbearhockey LJ because it was an opportunity for us to post our thoughts and chat with other fans of the hockey team.  I can say this probably hasn't gotten as much use as I would've thought, but it is what it is.

For years there has been a Maine Hockey Email List that people can subscribe to.  The list has been much more popular over time than this LJ board.  The individual who came up with the list has recently put up a message board for Maine Hockey - or any topic you might want to talk about in the world or in sports.

The forum is located at: http://blackbears.net/forum/index.php

It is open to the public.  Right now it's dominated by one or two people because of the fact that it's just now being opened up to the public.  Please swing by, take a look and register if you'd like to chat and share your thoughts.

hi :) [10 Oct 2007|09:25pm]

Do you go to UMaine? senior this year!

How/Why did you become a fan of UMaine hockey? My parents are HUGE hockey fans, so I was brought up into it. Came to UMaine... and who can say no to hockey?!

What is your best UMaine hockey memory? Even though we lost, the season we made it to the Frozen Four (I honestly can't remember if it was last season or the one before...). I remember watching the games from my house and being SO excited.

New Bananas or Old Bananas...which is better? I never really knew the old bananas. :-\

Anything else you would like to add? Alfond.

Do you go to UMaine? Graduated May of 2007
How/Why did you become a fan of UMaine hockey? My ex was really into it, and I got really into it... I blame him for... but I do love Maine Hockey! Hockey is the Greatest sport on the planet, and I am really glad the season has started again.
What is your best UMaine hockey memory? Probably when Rob Bellamy came out of the penalty box pissed (what's new) and hit a guy from UMass (i think) so hard his helmet flew off.
New Bananas or Old Bananas...which is better? to be quite honest i didn't know the old Bananas...
Anything else you would like to add? LET"S GO BLACK BEARS!!!! and I really miss sitting in the student section. I was at the U18 game saturday... and it was not cool sitting through the game. but i couldn't stand without getting yelled at.

For those of you who didn't see the U18 game, it was good. Defense was a little sloppy and David looked like he was broken, but the offense looked very good. Dimen (#3) was hot. I'm looking forward to watching this team grow. As a side note, does anyone know why Ben wasn't on the bench Saturday?

Please explain something to me... [27 Jan 2007|06:22pm]

[ mood | pissed off ]

Here is an excerpt from an article in today's Portland Press Herald:
"Where our team was at, we were out of sync," Whitehead said.  "We've been out of sync the last couple of weeks and unfortunately, I have to be honest, I saw this coming."
Here's my question for everyone - if you are a head coach of a struggling hockey team, and you supposedly see something like this coming, WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO FIX IT AHEAD OF TIME?!?!  To hear this type of comment come the day after we get handily beaten at home by a sub-500 hockey team is absolutely unacceptable.  How do you make this kind of comment to the press after what has happened recently?
I'm worried that this team is falling apart, and apparently the coach isn't in any position to stop it, he just watches it happen and shrugs afterwards.  Obviously this team lacks a few key traits right now - including leadership, desire and motivation.  The question is, can they right the ship before we are no longer around for the HE or NCAA playoffs?
Also - a comment / idea from the USCHO.com discussion forum:  "Instead of the introduction at the Alfond that tells us all about Maine's history (NC, FF apearances, All-Americans, etc.) which has nothing to do with this year's team, maybe they should just introduce them as losers of 4 out of 5 and 1/2 of their home games.  I think team might wake up if they wree booed to start the game."
It's unfortunate we are to the point where this is what we are getting from our supporting fans across the country.

2006-07 Maine Hockey - First Impressions [15 Oct 2006|02:23am]

I attended the UMaine hockey game tonight against Bemidji State and I thought I would offer some insight as to what I saw. Over the last two nights the Black Bears outscored the Beavers 13-4. It's only the second game of the season, but Bemidji State did make the NCAA Tournament last year. This isn't Alabama-Huntsville or Merrimack we're talking about here.

OFFENSE: Speed and puck-handling were the standout skills I saw, led by team captain Michel Leveille, who is an absolute burner. Forwards Wes Clark, Mike Hamilton and Brent Shepheard are very fast with some nifty stick moves. Juniors Keenan Hopson and Rob Bellamy are great passers and have a nose for the puck. Defenseman Mike Lundin has a heavy slapshot from the point that seems to generate some nice rebounds on the power play. So far, the Black Bears have had no trouble scoring. The intensity level on the offensive attack is very high. They don't appear to quit on plays or get complacent holding a lead.

DEFENSE: Joining the talented Lundin, Super-sized soph Simon Danis-Pepin (6'7" 221 lbs) and senior Travis Ramsey (6'4" 211 lbs) bring the noise in the defensive zone. Ramsey skates like a two-way forward with some nice passing skill for a defenseman and he finishes his checks. Denis-Pepin is huge and uses his size to push opponents off of the puck as if they were small children. He does lack speed and will need to develop his awareness during an incoming offensive attack. With an expanded role and more playing time this season (23 games in '05-06) he should have the opportunity to do just that. Additionally on defense, don't miss scrappy 5'9" junior Bret Tyler, who plays a lot bigger than his size would indicate.

GOALTENDING: Big Ben Bishop begins his sophomore campaign after a fantastic 2005-06. The 6'7" keeper notched a 21-8-2 record last year with a 2.28 GAA and .907 save percentage. His size obviously makes him a tough goaltender to beat, but what Bishop needs to work on his staying in the net. He still tends to wander out of the crease and play the puck recklessly. Though he is an excellent puck handler, there are occasions where Bishop will play out of position and runs the risk of giving up an empty net goal. It looks like he's improving in this area, and if he puts up numbers similar to last year, you can expect the Black Bears to be playing in another NCAA Tournament.

DIAPER DANDIES: The future is assured in Orono with slick forward Zach Sills (6'0" 187) and big defenseman David de Kastrozza (6'3" 200). The superstar of this bunch though could be Teddy Purcell (6'3" 177). The freshman forward scored two goals tonight and seemed to be around the net the whole game. Remember the name. He's going to be a good one.

That's all I got. I'm no sportswriter. It's just one man's opinion.

Go Blue!

The Season's Over [06 Apr 2006|11:19pm]

Well, unfortunately, an up and down season for a team that seemed to be peaking at just the right time ended tonight.

Maine fell to a very strong, extremely talented Wisconsin team tonight, 5-2.

Maine had their chances, but couldn't capitalize against a team that just played better.

No real excuses. I mean, there were break downs on defense, mis-communication on offense, questionable calls, etc. But, these occur in every game at every level, and in the end you just have to tip your cap to the team that played better, and tonight that is Wisconsin.

I, for one, will be cheering for the Badgers to win their 6th NCAA Championship, first since 1990, against a BC team that has played well themselves lately.

For those who still watch, it should be a great game.

UMaine vs. MSU [29 Mar 2006|09:52pm]

For those who didn't know, hockeyfan, our friend Steve and I went to the University of Maine hockey game vs. Michigan State University this past weekend. As usual, I took my camera, and snapped some photos. By some, I mean 149. I deleted some and narrowed it down to 107. I thought I'd share, so here ya go. I will warn you, there are about 16 pictures behind here, so it may take a second.

Exporting them to be smaller decreases the quality a bit...Collapse )

Some people I will never understand... [24 Mar 2006|10:11pm]

[ mood | pissed off ]

Derek Damon is suspended for the 1st round game against Harvard for an undisclosed violation of the student conduct code.

Let me get this right.  He's been to the title game, the pinnacle of his sport, only to lose.  So, in what is his last opportunity to win an NCAA Championship for the college in his own backyard, he thinks the following:

"You know what would be a lot of fun?  Let's go out and do something that will get me suspended for a game.  That way my team, on which I am the 4th leading scorer, will have to try to win the 1st round game without me.  If they lose, I get to live on with the thought that I probably played a large role in helping my team lose, and thus my college career is over!  SWEET!"

If we win, I hope he's benched for the 2nd round game.

Thanks for nothing (this week) Derek!

wow! this is great to see so many people posting here lately! this community has been pretty dead the entire season. i can't figure it out since we've had a fairly good year this year.

so, what do people think about maine going to albany? think we'll beat harvard? think we'll make it to the frozen four? i sure hope so. this weekend's loss was tough to bear (especially if you were there like i was!) but hopefully bishop will be less nervous this coming weekend in albany.

Bring on the Crimson!! [19 Mar 2006|12:41pm]

[ mood | excited ]

No big surprises in the NCAA brackets this morning.  Maine is staying East thanks to being placed in the Albany region.  Maine's 1st game is on Saturday, March 25th.  Here is the entire bracket:

Midwest Regional (Green Bay)
No. 1 Wisconsin vs. No. 4 Bemidji State
No. 2 Cornell vs. No. 3 Colorado College

West Regional (Grand Forks)
No. 1 Minnesota vs. No. 4 Holy Cross
No. 2 North Dakota vs. No. 3 Michigan

East Regional (Albany)
No. 1 Michigan State vs. No. 4 New Hampshire
No. 2 Harvard vs. No 3. Maine

Northeast Regional (Worcester)
No. 1 Boston University vs. No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha
No. 2 Miami (OH) vs. No. 3 Boston College

Personally, I like the region we're in.  Both the West and Northeast Regions seem to be very difficult.  Albany is only about a 6 hour drive from Orono, so anyone who wants to go see it, the tickets are on sale via www.pepsiarena.com.  $82 (including service charges) gets you tickets to all 3 games (2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday).  Hotels seem to range from $60 - $150/night.  Hopefully Maine will have a large turnout (as you can see, I was considering it myself).

Whew. [19 Mar 2006|03:17am]

[ mood | amused ]

I hope everyone got a chance to attend the Hockey East Championship weekend, or at minimum see it on NESN. I went to the games with bcoolie, drdroo, hockeyfan and lunar341. I'm going to post kind of a running diary of the whole weekend in the next day or so, but here's an excerpt I wanted to share before I finally crashed in my own bed for the first time in two days:

Overheard at the BU/UNH Game on Friday night:

bcoolie: "I think they should go for the snowman!"
Me: "I'd like to see the snowman."

(Note: In case you didn't know, the Snowman is when a team scores 8 goals. The number 8 is shaped like a snowman)

BU scores in the 3rd period to make it 8-2. Cheering, yelling, screaming ensue.

bcoolie: (clapping and yelling) "HOW ABOUT DOUBLE DIGITS?"
Nearby BU Fans: (laughing and cheering us in our Maine jerseys as we are cheering for BU)

Later... BU scores again to make it 9-2

BU fan in front of us: "MERCY RULE!"
Me: "WAVE THE WHITE FLAG! SOMEBODY STOP THE FIGHT!" (starts doing the stupid "rotating finger" gesture the UNH fans do after they score)
UNH fan two rows down from us: "I've had enough of this shit." (leaves)

Hockey East Championship [19 Mar 2006|12:13am]

[ mood | tired ]

A few first-hand notes on the Hockey East Championship this weekend.

First off, the bad news.  As we all know, Maine fell to BC in the Semi-Finals.  Maine played well, but made some fairly costly and consistent errors.  Brett Tyler seemed to get caught too deep in the offensive zone fairly often, allowing many BC odd-man rushes up the ice.  Maine also seemed a bit defeated after the first period.  They outplayed BC in the opening frame, but failed to score.  I think it knocked them down, and they really weren't able to recover or maintain the offensive pressure.

If there's one good thing to take from the game, it's that we have a gem in Ben Bishop.  He's a freshman, which mean he has things to work on, just like any other freshman hockey player.  But, he played very well in a HUGE game.  We'll wait and see how well he plays in the NCAA tournament (as of right now, which is 11:52pm ET, it looks like Maine will get in as either a #4 seed or a low #3 seed).  As he gains experience, I think he'll only get better.  Unfortunately, I also think this means Lundin is going to leave.  He was going to leave the program last year, but then Jimmy went pro and Lundin thought he would have the job.  Now that it appears to have been given to Ben full time, there's no reason for him to stay.

That being said, some additional thoughts from the weekend:Collapse )

I think I've rambled on enough for now.  I'm sure many people watched the games on TV.  They were well worth it.  Although Maine didn't win, the weekend had almost anything a hockey fan could want.  Power play goals, short handed goals, empty net goals (ugh), hitting, scoring, blowouts, fans, noise, etc.  Of all the teams that were there, if Maine wasn't going to win, BU is the one I can stand the most to take the trophy for one year.  In the meantime, let's all watch ESPN2 at 11:00am on Sunday to see what happens to Maine regarding the NCAA, and then let's hope for a big splash in the national tournament.  Because, as we all know (and UNH has yet to discover), that's the only trophy that matters!

Let's go dancing! [11 Mar 2006|11:57pm]

[ mood | excited ]

Hello? Does anyone post here anymore?

Well, if you insist.

With Maine's 4-3 win over UMass-Lowell tonight, they will advance to the Hockey East Championship weekend next Friday and Saturday.

So, who's going? If you can, definitely find a way to go. It's like a UNH home game otherwise, there were way more fans from their school over the other 3 teams (UMass-Amherst, BU, BC) the last time I went.

I went to the 2003 tourney. Maine lost to UMass-Amherst in the Quarterfinal and didn't make it down there, but we still had a blast and saw a great final between UNH and BU that went to a 1-0 overtime win for the University of No Hardware.

If you see 5 guys being ejected from the Club Level section of the TD Banknorth Garden for bad behavior, that's probably us.

vermont and the rest of the season [12 Feb 2006|03:46pm]

[ mood | busy ]

so... this community has been pretty dead all season which surprises me because of the new members we've had since last season.

what a great series against vermont this weekend, coming back from behind both nights! friday night we came back from a 1-0 deficit, scoring 3 goals in 74 seconds, which isn't something that happens very often with vermont. saturday night, we came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie it 4-4 overall. simply amazing. i hope this keeps up, i think the guys are starting to realize how important the remaining games are.

so how do you think we're going to do overall? any predictions?

and, for those of you who were at the game last weekend... you remember the zamboni had to go off the ice after it started clearing it? well, this is why. only our very own mascot bananas :)

Bananas the Black Bear thought it would be a good idea by putting on a little strip show during the first intermission of Saturday night’s game between Maine and UNH, but there was one miscalculation. Bananas tossed his shirt aside, and it ended up getting caught in the Zamboni, delaying the start of the second period.

Hello! [01 Nov 2005|08:28pm]

Age: 29

Do you go to UMaine? Alumna...Class of '98

How/Why did you become a fan of UMaine hockey? My dad (at my urging/pleading/begging) got season tickets 22 years ago, and we've been going to games ever since.

What is your best UMaine hockey memory? There are so many that it's hard to narrow it down. The Alaska trip with the team in the late 80s is probably the most memorable...snowstorm delays out of Boston, hold over in Utah because a volcano in the flight path was spewing ashes, bomb scare in the airport on arrival (relating to a suitcase that, ironically enough, should have been in Hawaii), dog sledding, the sinking rink, my brief moments as stick girl, the broken wrist...all good times. BUT my best UMaine hockey memory to date would be the post-game reception for the Boston Final Four loss...actually that whole season was very, very special :o)

New Bananas or Old Bananas...which is better? Any Bananas is a great Bananas!!

It pisses me off when your sitting in the student section EE and there is a woman sitting behind you telling you to sit down and shut up. THen she goes and gets security because you refuse to listen. Then they sit there the entire game making sure you dont get out of your seat. Tis bullshit, its the student section...
